The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada has signed a deal to procure 20 million more Covid-19 vaccine doses.
While addressing the media, Trudeau said the agreement was reached with AstraZeneca to access a vaccine prospect currently being developed at Oxford University.
He said: “We’ve been guided by science since the very beginning and right now, both the Covid-19 vaccine task force and the immunity task force are doing important work to help us identify the most promising vaccine options and strategies.”
With this new deal in the bag, the government of Trudeau has obtained access to six leading vaccine candidates.
Meanwhile, none of the candidates has been proven to be effective so far.
Health Canada said that it would review the evidence on safety, efficacy and manufacturing quality for every vaccine to know if individual vaccines will be certified okay for use in Canada before they are made available to the public.
This development came few days after Trudeau revealed that a second coronavirus wave has commenced in the country amid concerns over an imminent national lockdown.
