Brazil now ranks second in the world behind the United States to record over one million cases of COVID-19.
Yesterday, Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced a record 54,771 new cases. The announced cases is the highest daily increase recorded by a country since the advent of the pandemic, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 1,032,913.
According to the officials, about half of the increase occured as a result of delayed reporting in São Paulo and two other states.
In addition to that, the country has recorded over 1,200 deaths daily since the last 4 days, taking the total number of deaths to around 49,000.
The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro has been blamed for his response to the pandemic.
Bolsonaro has clashed severally with Mayors and State Governors over their tough restrictions to halt the spread of the virus. Also, two Ministers have resigned because of his approach.
