Bobi Wine; who is the leading opposition leader in Uganda, has claimed that he fears for his life. This statement comes immediately after the electoral commission declared Museveni as the winner of the recently concluded presidential election. This is Museveni’s sixth term as president of Uganda.
Speaking to reporters, Bobi Wine disputed the validity of the election results claiming that there were numerous irregularities that were ignored by election officials. Dozens of people died during a campaign period that was marred with violence. Election monitors came out to condemn the government’s decision to shut down the internet just ahead of Election Day.
The singer-turned-politician whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said that nobody is allowed to come into or leave his house. He also said that both international and local journalists are blocked from visiting his home.
Officials announced that Museveni won by 58.64 percent of the total votes while Bobi Wine finished second with 34.83 percent.
Mr Museveni described the concluded election as Uganda’s fairest vote of all time. The result gives President Museveni, 76, five more years as president. He has been in power since 1986.
To put it in context, this win means that Museveni’s presidency has lasted longer than that of six US leaders and will likely last as long as Joe Biden’s term in office. Interestingly, 80% of Uganda’s population is youthful, meaning that most Ugandans have never known another president.
Bobi Wine is pushing for all his fellow citizens to reject Museveni’s presidency using lawful and peaceful mechanisms because the election’s results were rigged to favor Museveni. On the other hand, Ugandan law enforcers have warned that they are ready to crash any form of protests or insurrections. In November, authorities shot at rioters and protesters who were demonstrating against the arrest of two candidates.
On Jan.14, law enforcers arrested 26 election observers who are still in custody. Authorities accused them of trying to create a parallel tallying center. According to official sources, the US and the European Union decided not to send observers for this year’s election. However, the EU ambassador to Uganda shocked many Ugandans after claiming to be satisfied with how the election was conducted.
It remains to be seen whether Bobi Wine will be allowed to collect evidence and present his case in court. Since 2001, the highest courts in the land have established that there are many illeguralities in the election process but they have always failed to overturn the election results. Well, this shouldn’t be shocking since all major positions in government including the judiciary are constituted of appointments made by president Museveni.
Bobi Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, performed exceptionally well especially when you consider that it is barely one year old. It succeeded in removing most of Musevenis legislators and ministers including his vice president. The party will lead the opposition if takes their seats in the House.
It remains to be seen whether Bobi Wine will finally succeed in toppling president Museveni’s dictatorial regime.
