Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has called for the creation of a Loss and Damage Fund, supported by countries that have contributed to the Climate Crisis. This appeal was made during a recent meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at Ilaro Court.
Prime Minister Mottley emphasized that the magnitude of the Climatic Crisis requires more than just public funds, and a dedicated fund would be instrumental in assisting countries impacted by disasters. She highlighted the critical importance of such a Loss and Damage Fund, particularly for Caribbean nations that could see their Gross Domestic Product and capacity severely compromised in the event of a disaster.
In addition to advocating for financial contributions to the fund, Prime Minister Mottley also noted the need for natural disaster clauses and mechanisms, as insurance premiums continue to rise due to climate-related risks.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan acknowledged the importance of countries knowing where they can turn for assistance during times of crisis. He also stressed the significance of enhanced efforts to reduce carbon emissions and urged greater attention to alternative energy sources, such as renewable energy.
During the meeting, the two leaders also discussed ongoing issues in Haiti, CARICOM’s response to regional challenges, the expansion of air routes, and the potential establishment of a “fast ferry” network among eastern and southern CARICOM Member States.
The meeting was attended by Barbados’ Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds; Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins; Minister of State in Foreign Trade and Business Development, Sandra Husbands; and Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Alies Jordan.
