According to Coach Achim Beierlorzer, Nigerian forward, Taiwo Awoniyi has regained consciousness and he is responding well after sustaining a head injury during Mainz FC’s home loss to Augsburg.
Awoniyi was rushed to the hospital yesterday after colliding with Felix Uduokhai of Augsburg. Play was stalled for about five minutes before Taiwo was stretchered off after 23 minutes. Karim Onisiwo replaced him.
During his post-match interview, Beierlorzer said: “Taiwo is conscious and responsive. He has suffered a severe concussion but can remember everything.
“Uduokhai is also spending the night in the hospital as a precautionary measure.”
The only goal of the match was scored by Florian Niederlechner after 60 seconds. As a result of the defeat, Mainz are now 15th on the log and are two points above the relegation zone, after raking up 31 points from 31 games.
Meanwhile, the Sporting Director of Mainz, Rouven Schroder has revealed that the club will seek to extend Awoniyi’s loan deal for one more season.
Awoniyi joined Mainz from Liverpool on a one-year loan deal from Liverpool at the start of the season and has scored one goal in 12 Bundesliga appearances.
While talking to Bild, Schroder said: “We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position. We are now waiting for the last games. Then we’ll see what the next steps are.”
