El Pais newspaper has reported that an official autopsy has confirmed that John McAfee died by suicide in a Spanish cell where he was awaiting his extradition to the United States.
Prison wardens saw the corpse of McAfee hanging in his cell on Wednesday June 23 in what looked like a suicide, his lawyer, Javier Villalba said recently.
According to reports a suicide note was discovered in McAfee’s pocket when he died.
Authorities in Spain have earlier disclosed that everything at the scene in his cell pointed to the fact that the 75-year-old killed himself.

However, his widow, Janice McAfee, has requested that a ‘thorough investigation’ be carried out on the cause of his death. She said her husband did not appear suicidal when they spoke last.
In her first public remarks after the death of her husband, Janice said she wanted a ‘thorough investigation’ to provide ‘answers about how this was able to happen.’
While talking to reporters outside the Brians 2 penitentiary northwest of Barcelona when she went to recover her late husband’s belongings, she said: “His last words to me were ‘I love you and I will call you in the evening.”
She revealed that they spoke earlier on the day he died and he made no indication that he wanted to commit suicide.
She added: “Those words are not words of somebody who is suicidal.”
