Argentina’s Vice President, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has been found guilty by a Federal court in a high-profile corruption case and she has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The Vice President, who denies the allegations against her and labelled the trial as a political witch hunt, was found guilty of “fraudulent administration to the detriment of the state.” The charge that she ran a criminal organization, which would have led to a more severe punishment was rejected by the three-panel judge.
As things stand, she is unlikely to spend any time behind bars as she holds congressional immunity owing to her role as Argentina’s deputy leader and head of the Senate.
As expected, the sentence will be appealed by Fernandez de Kirchner, who has rejected the allegations against her as a “staged fable.”
The three-judge panel declared her guilty of “fraudulent administration” over irregular public works contracts that she awarded when she was president 2007 and 2015.
She responded to the verdict by saying that “none of the lies were proven” and that she was convicted by a “legal mafia.”
“I won’t be a candidate for anything, not a senator, or a deputy or president of the nation” in the 2023 general elections, she said in a long broadcast she made immediately after the court ruled.
