Are you prepared for a cyber attack?

(NC) As we live more of our lives online, whether through social apps, shopping, banking or work, new cyber risks to our personal data and finances are an increasing reality. And while many of us may think we’re knowledgeable about these threats, cyber criminals are often a step (or more) ahead.

Most Canadians are aware of better-known online threats such as malware, phishing and ransomware, but far fewer are aware of new and more sophisticated activities that have the potential to do more harm, according to a recent poll.

“Cybercrime has grown year over year and continues to evolve quickly,” says Adam Evans, chief information security officer at RBC. “Our poll reveals that despite a high level of concern, most Canadians have not yet taken steps to protect themselves and might struggle to recover from a cyber-attack.”

How to prepare
You can take some simple security measures to help protect yourself against cybercrime. These include installing antivirus software, multi-factor authentication, changing your passwords every three to six months, or using a strong password generator.

However, it’s also important to be aware of the latest ways cyber criminals try to access your information. For example, some newer threats include pharming, which is the practice of redirecting internet users to a fake website; and vishing, in which criminals call or leave voicemails claiming to be representatives of a reputable company. Both are an attempt to steal and/or get you to divulge personal credentials or banking information.

Education is key. Become more aware and protect yourself online with resources like The Vault, a downloadable guide to cyber safety, available at rbc.com/cyber.
