Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has come out to say that the defection of the Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not come as a surprise.
The ruling party added that the governor’s defection to the opposition party is no big deal, as such, it should not make the headlines.
This was disclosed in a statement by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu. Issa-Onilu said the party knew Obaseki was defecting to another party after his resignation from the APC.
Obaseki, who resigned from the APC after he was disqualified from the party’s governorship primaries in Edo State joined the PDP yesterday.
The PDP had granted Obaseki and his Deputy waiver to contest the gubernatorial election on its platform.
Issa-Onilu said: “It has not come to us as a surprise. We knew he had defected long ago because he resigned his membership of the party which we had accepted.
“So you cannot defect twice. If he is defecting again, we do not know whether what he has just done now is news any longer.”
