Federal Defense Minister, Anita Anand, has disclosed that the US government’s decision to shoot down a high-altitude surveillance balloon that was suspected of spying for China is supported by Canada, adding that the balloon violated Canadian airspace.

Fighter jets downed the balloon off the Carolina coast recently after it had journeyed over sensitive military sites across North America.
Hours later, Anita Anand MP issued a statement saying she and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were briefed about the operation by the national security and intelligence advisor and the Chief of Defense staff.
She said that Canada has engaged closely with its American counterparts on the decision and thanked the US for its close collaboration.
In a statement, Anand said: “Officials in the national security community have been working bi-nationally and Canada has been closely engaged with its U.S. counterparts on the decision and unequivocally supports the actions taken.”
