Alphonso Davies hosts soccer camp and inspires young players

Alphonso Davies, a 22-year-old Canadian footballer who made history by scoring Canada’s first and only goal at the men’s FIFA World Cup in 2022, has inspired a young generation of players by hosting soccer camp in a bid to encourage young Canadians to play football.

The soccer camp took place at Victoria Soccer Club, where Davies played a lot of matches and spent hours training as a child. According to ATG Sports Management’s spokesperson, tickets were sold-out within five hours of going online.

He said the nationwide legacy project would run camps with grassroots programs and focus on providing kids with the same curriculum Davies practised while growing up.

According to him, the next camp will be hosted in Toronto later this summer, and would later be expanded to regular camps every year.

On the soccer field, Davies, who wore a black jersey and black pants, was quickly surrounded by kids who were eager to learn and talk to their favourite sports star. The kids told him how much they love him, showed him their moves and followed him around on the pitch.

In return, Davies engaged with the kids, guided them on shooting drills and occasionally spoke to kids who were waiting for their turn on the pitch.

Davies said: “Growing up, I remember doing these drills, playing five-on-fives. It helps make it fun for everyone being able to compete with your peers.

“These are the things I did to help me develop my skills and also socialize with others.”

Nedal Huoseh, the CEO of ATG Sports Management, said launching the camp in Davies’s hometown was great for the legacy program.

He added: “Alphonso is a symbol of what is possible for many kids who have big dreams, and we hope these camps can inspire kids to be the best version of themselves.”
