The government of Alberta has announced a $211.3 million plan to invest in the province’s public land and parks, including $500,000 for new campgrounds.
The investment includes around $10 million over three years to create Big Island Provincial Park in southwest Edmonton. Deputy Premier, Kaycee Madu, and Minister of Forestry, Parks, and Tourism, Todd Loewen, announced the development recently at a south Edmonton Cabela’s store.
The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a sharp increase in camping numbers in Alberta’s provincial parks, with more than 10 million visitors in 2022. Madu said this increase in visitation and usage put pressure on existing facilities and services.
Loewen said the investment will be used to widen campgrounds, create more recreation and tourism opportunities, and modernize facilities to create allowance for newer, larger RVs.
He said: “This investment allows us to expand and enhance campgrounds, trails and recreation infrastructure, ensuring these areas will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.”
Alberta has discovered sites with potential for immediate expansion, including the Blue Rapids Provincial Recreation Area, Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, and Castle Provincial Park.
