Akwa United Football Club has won the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title for the first time after the recent 5-2 thrashing of MFM in Uyo.
The football club, whose stadium is the Nest of Champions, Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, is winning the title for the first time in the history of the competition.
Charles Atshimene scored the opening goal was through a beautiful header from close range in the 24th minute.

The football club doubled the advantage later in the first half when Alimi Adebayo scored an own goal by diverting Mfon Udoh’s cross into his net.
Udoh netted the third goal for Akwa United two minutes after the hour mark.
MFM pulled a goal from the spot in the 68th minute through Michael Mbonu after Dennis Obasi was fouled inside the 18 yard but Atshimene scored his second goal and Akwa United’s fourth of the game five minutes from time, before Obasi pulled a goal back for MFM on 88 minutes.
Atshimene scored his third of the game at the 90th minute to make it 5-2 to the home team as they top the standings with 71 points from 37 matches.
Akwa United become champions with one game left to play this season.
