NLC asks Nigerian government to increase salaries by 50 percent

No fewer than 19 unions have directed their workers to join in the indefinite strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The National Executive Council meeting of the labour unions agreed to embark on the strike, as a result of the failure of the Federal Government to tackle issues affecting workers, like the minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and poor governance.

Unions had also made some demands, which the government failed to meet following the recent crisis in Imo that resulted in the brutalization of the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, and some members of the NLC.

Unions that have complied with the directives include:

  1. Nigeria Union of Railway Workers.
  2. The Academic Staff Union of Universities.
  3. The Senior Staff Associations of Nigerian Universities.
  4. The College of Education Academic Staff Union.
  5. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.
  6. The National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees.
  7. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics.
  8. The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria.
  9. National Association of Academic Technologists.
  10. National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees.
  11. Nigeria Union Of Local Government Employees.
  12. Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria.
  13. Nigeria Union of Public Service Reportorial, Secretarial, Data Processors and Allied Workers.
  14. National Union of Textile Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria.
  15. National Associations of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives.
  16. National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees.
  17. Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria.
  18. The National Union of Electricity Employees.
  19. Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria.
