Russia has announced that it is in support of the effort of Pope Francis to end the war in Ukraine when it revealed a vatican envoy would talk with President Vladimir Putin’s government in Moscow.
Russia stated that Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi started a Russia visit recently in a first of such trip since Putin deployed troops to Ukraine in February 2022.
The meeting takes greater importance as high-ranking Catholic clerics are seldomly seen in Moscow, which no Pope has ever visited.
Zuppi’s trip came many weeks after he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
Government’s spokesman, Dmity Peskov, said: “We highly value the efforts and initiatives of the Vatican in looking for a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis. We welcome them.”
He said Zuppi would hold talks with Putin’s foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov.
The Vatican said the aim of Zuppi’s visit was to “encourage gestures of humanity, which can help promote a solution to the current tragic situation and find ways to achieve a just peace.”
