The United States House of Representatives has voted to officially authorize its ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden in what could give them more legal power to investigate the President’s family’s business dealings.
The Republican-dominated House voted 221-212 along party lines to approve the investigation which is trying to find out whether Biden improperly benefited from his 53-year-old son Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings, hours after Hunter Biden ignored a call to testify behind closed doors.
The vote puts Republicans in districts where Biden won in 2020 on the record about whether they back an investigation that has so far revealed no wrongdoing by Biden.
For months, Republicans on the House Oversight, Judiciary and Ways and Means Committees have been making effort to show that Biden was enriched by his family’s foreign business dealings and took bribes.
Meanwhile, the entire House did not vote to open an impeachment probe, making many Democrats to question its legal authority.
Jim Jordan, Ohio Representative and Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, believes the vote is a strong message to the White House that every Republican voted for it.
While talking to journalists, he said: “This helps us get the witnesses, the key witnesses, that we want.”
Also, GOP lawmakers believe that a vote to officially authorize the probe would give them leverage in court as they request documents and witness testimony, including from Hunter Biden, who ignored a subpoena to appear for a closed-door deposition on Wednesday.
