In a move that underscores growing tension in the political landscape, the US House of Representatives has approved an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, with all Republicans rallying behind the contentious process.
Despite reservations among some party members about the lack of evidence substantiating misconduct by the president, the 221-212 party-line vote solidified the entire House Republican conference’s backing for an impeachment process that could lead to severe consequences under the Constitution.
The authorization of this months-long inquiry guarantees that the impeachment investigation will extend into 2024, coinciding with Biden’s reelection campaign, potentially setting the stage for a showdown with former President Donald Trump. Trump, who faced two impeachments during his time in office, remains a prominent figure in the political landscape.
The decision to hold the vote came as House Speaker Mike Johnson and his leadership team faced mounting pressure to demonstrate progress in the nearly year-long probe focused on the business dealings of Biden’s family members. While ethical questions have been raised, no evidence has surfaced indicating corrupt actions or acceptance of bribes by President Biden in his current or previous role as vice president.
Acknowledging the frustration over the pace of the inquiry, Johnson referred to the vote as the “next necessary step.” The White House responded by labeling the entire process a baseless fishing expedition, criticizing Republicans for pushing ahead despite admissions within their own party that there is insufficient evidence to support impeaching President Biden.
House Democrats voiced strong opposition to the inquiry resolution, with Rep. Jim McGovern describing it as an “extreme political stunt” lacking credibility, legitimacy, and integrity during a floor debate.
Some House Republicans, particularly those representing politically divided districts, had been hesitant to vote on Biden’s impeachment, fearing potential political repercussions. However, GOP leaders argued that the resolution was a procedural step, not a decision to impeach, ultimately convincing skeptics.
Rep. Tom Emmer, a member of the GOP leadership team, emphasized that supporting an impeachment inquiry did not equate to endorsing impeachment itself. He stated that Republicans would continue following the facts, considering impeachment proceedings only if evidence of treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors emerged.
The recent argument by GOP leadership that authorizing the inquiry would enhance their legal standing appears to have swayed many hesitant Republicans. The White House had questioned the legal and constitutional basis for information requests, arguing that the investigation lacked legitimacy without a formal impeachment inquiry authorized by a full House vote.
In a letter last month, a top White House attorney portrayed the GOP investigation as overzealous and illegitimate, citing House Speaker Mike Johnson’s previous stance that any inquiry without a House vote would be a sham when Trump faced potential impeachment in 2019.
