There is a new farmer’s market erupting in Toronto that will make it on customer’s weekly grocery list.
The Afro-Caribbean Famers Market is making its debut as a weekly outdoor experience, providing local and organically grown produce for people in Diaspora. The market is partnering with York-Eglinton BIA and Councillor of the City, Josh Matlow. The market will take off at Toronto’s Green P car park at 1531 Eglinton Ave. W.

According to Josh Matlow during a press release, “the market will provide residents with fresh produce and delicious food that reflects our city’s Caribbean communities and African Diaspora.”
“It will also create a vibrant and animated ‘town square’ every Sunday that brings people together and contributes to the economic and cultural development of Little Jamaica.”
Some of the produce that will be featured will be imported from the Caribbean and Africa. It will also involve food made locally like bread, dessert and sauces. The focus of the market is to “elevate racialized farmers alongside food-producers in densely urbanized neighbourhoods,” according to the press release.
Nick Alampi, Chair of the York-Eglinton Business Improvement Area (BIA), during his press release stated that, “The Key to having thriving, successful and strong communities is to have inclusive food security.” He continues, “Visitors to the market will be supporting our local farmers and small businesses while also receiving the freshest, healthiest food possible.”
The currency of the farmers’ market will be Callaloo Cash, which is a market currency program that subsidizes and limits financial barriers for low income earners. Other businesses can purchase the cash and distribute it to members of the community to have subsidized purchases.
“Our market does not want to leave anyone out, we want everyone to have access to healthy, clean food,” reads the press release.
The Afro-Caribbean Farmers Market will run each Sunday starting July from 11 a.m to 3 p.m.
