Afghanistan’s Taliban regime has prohibited women and girls from attending universities in the country. This has generated international condemnation and anguish among young people in the country.
The announcement was made recently in a letter released by the Taliban’s Ministry of Higher Education. The development further restricts education of women after girls were excluded from secondary schools when the Taliban returned in 2021.
Part of the statement tweeted by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Hafiz Hashimi said: “Based on cabinet decision…education for women is suspended until further notice. The decision should be implemented immediately.”

The order takes effect immediately and has completed all the restrictions the Taliban imposed on Afghan women’s life in the 1990s.
The new law has been criticized and condemned with the United Nations and many countries slamming the order, which brings Afghanistan back to the Taliban’s first period of rule when girls could not access formal education.
The UN’s Special Rapporteur to Afghanistan in a swift reaction said it was “a new low further violating the right to equal education and deepens the erasure of women from Afghan society.”
Also, the United States condemned the order, saying such a move would “come with consequences for the Taliban.”
In a statement, United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, said: “The Taliban cannot expect to be a legitimate member of the international community until they respect the rights of all in Afghanistan.

“No country can thrive when half of its population is held back.”
