UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has praised the “bravery, perseverance, and political imagination” of the leaders who shaped Northern Ireland’s peace deal on the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
The agreement stopped Northern Ireland’s decades-long violent conflict known as the Troubles. The conflict claimed the lives of thousands of people. Sunak urged Stormont politicians to “get on with the business of governance” and commit again to the promise of economic opportunity, prosperity, and stability.

Sunak explained the Good Friday Agreement’s partnership between the British and Irish governments and its great international support from the UK’s closest allies, including the upcoming visit of United States President Joe Biden to Northern Ireland. Also, he stated that the agreement was based on compromise within Northern Ireland itself, and extolled the leaders who made difficult decisions, accepted compromise, and exhibited leadership.
While talking about the progress made since the Good Friday Agreement, Sunak noted the significance of recommitting to the promise made in 1998 and the agreements that ensued. He demanded a focus on economic opportunity, prosperity, and stability in Northern Ireland and a redoubling of efforts to fulfil the promise.
The 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement is a major milestone for Northern Ireland and the UK, and serves as a reminder of the significance of peace and compromise in resolving conflicts. The challenges encountered by Stormont politicians highlight the need for persistent efforts to ensure economic opportunity and stability for every citizen.
