Ontario’s colleges and universities minister, Jill Dunlop, has revealed she is holding consultations with colleges, universities and municipalities this fall on student housing.
According to the minister, she is consulting with the sector on how to eliminate barriers to creating affordable student housing and will be hosting roundtable talks this fall that will include municipalities, private career colleges and builders.
A recent report by a University of Ottawa-based experts discovered that Ontario universities nearly doubled the enrolment of international students between 2014-15 and 2021-22, and colleges more than tripled international enrolment, but the creation of student housing has not been at par.

A report issued late last year by Ontario’s auditor general discovered that a 10 percent tuition cut and subsequent freeze that was introduced by the government in 2019 meant that universities had to increase their dependence on international student tuition.
Not too long ago, Dunlop announced that an expert panel would examine the “financial sustainability” of the post-secondary education sector and she has told a legislative committee that their report is expected in the coming weeks.
According to her, the panel is looking at issues bordering on international students, and that she does not align with a cap on international student visas, which the federal government has suggested it is appraising.
