The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the procurement and installation of luggage scanners in Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano railway stations.
This development is part of the government’s plan to improve railway transport safety amid growing security concerns.
The installation will include eight colour imaging X-ray scanners, eight body scanners metal detectors and 50 handheld scanners.
The Minister of State for Transportation, Ademola Adegoroye, announced this development after the recent Federal Executive Council meeting. He added that the procurement would cost N498m.
While speaking on the new installation, Adegoroye said the devices were important in securing lives and property on the rail.
He added that the government’s aggressive development of Nigeria’s railway infrastructure nationwide triggered the procurement of the scanners.
He said: “Since we’re starting the railway revolution, we are trying to put in place a lot of things with the railways. We don’t want people to come and damage all that the government has been trying to put in place in that sector.”
The installation of luggage scanners in these railway stations will enhance safety and security on the rail, give assurance to passengers, and improve Nigeria’s transportation system.
