A website recently launched in Hamilton will help residents report local hate-motivated incidents.
‘WeSupport’ seeks to tackle the needs of individuals that have encountered hate by providing an unbiased platform for people to raise concerns.
According to the creators of the site, the development of WeSupport started in 2019, with a detailed study examining alternative approaches to mitigating hate incidents.
WeSupport’s website stated: “Existing literature, platforms, and reporting systems were carefully reviewed, with a focus on addressing the inadequacies of police-based or complaint-based legal frameworks.”
The online tool permits users to post their stories, find links to existing resources and support networks, and find their way around complex complaint systems related to healthcare, employment, education, housing, and other areas.

WeSupport said: “Upon submission of your story, you decide how much you would like to share, who you would like to seek support from and what happens with your story and the data that you have provided.”
Hamilton Police’s hate crime statistical report reveals that in 2022 alone, there were a total of 174 hate/bias occurrences reported (61 percent increase since the previous years). Also, the majority of these incidents were related to racial bias, sexual orientation and religion.
WeSupport is managed by Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion (HCCI) and the Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre (HARRC) that aims to break the isolation often encountered by victims of hate, offering them solidarity of a supportive community.
