On May 18, Mississauga Council voted to rescind section 21(8) of the City’s Sign By-law which stated that only one election sign per candidate was allowed on private property. This move allows residents to place multiple election signs, including ones from the same candidate, on their private property. This change is effective immediately.
“Realistically, we need to consider whether enforcing this by-law is a good use of staff time and taxpayer money,” said Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson. “It’s important that our staff are able to enforce the by-laws that we have in place and with all of the important programs we need to fund and the important by-laws our staff need to enforce, it makes sense to use our limited staff resources elsewhere.”
City staff will continue to enforce infractions to the Sign By-law on private and public property. Mississauga does not allow election signs on public property.
“Although Council’s decision has eliminated the one-sign-per-property section of the by-law, we encourage residents to be respectful of their neighbours and the character of their neighbourhoods and monitor themselves accordingly,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner of Transportation and Works. “We all want to keep Mississauga safe and beautiful and ask residents to keep these factors in mind as they place their election signs.”
