A Manitoba man has been charged for cutting down spruce trees illegally from a government plantation in Manitoba and selling them as Christmas trees at a business in Steinbach.
Conservation officers commenced an investigation after receiving information about the illegal act. Recently, they saw a man hauling trees out of the plantation on Crown land north of Marchand.
Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development said the plantation is a valuable test area that grows high-quality trees for use in forestry renewal projects across southern Manitoba.

Earl Simmons, Manitoba’s chief conservation officer, said he suspected the other 119 trees were sold illegally through the man’s business.
According to his estimation, the damage from the loss of the trees from the plantation is in the region of $30,000.
