A renowned basketball star in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and a key player for the Canada Women’s National Basketball team, Kia Nurse was celebrated with the Athlete Award at the prestigious Legacy Awards in Toronto.
This remarkable event was dedicated to recognizing and honoring the incredible talent within the Black Canadian community.
Nurse, who currently shines with the Seattle Storm in the WNBA, was presented with the award by her sister, Tamika, a former Canadian junior basketball standout and University of Oregon alumna. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Nurse paid tribute to the vital individuals who have been the bedrock of her journey, including her husband and her sister, who stood by her side on the stage.
With deep gratitude, Nurse expressed, “At the heart of my village lies the people who deserve the most. Thank you for sticking with me, Tamika; without you, there is no me.”
She fondly reminisced about her early connection to the sport, sharing, “I picked up a basketball when I was four years old because she [Tamika] was Michael Jordan; this is who I wanted to be,” as she pointed toward her sister.
The Legacy Awards hold a distinctive place as Canada’s inaugural awards ceremony dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary talent within the Black community. This momentous occasion unfolded at History, an exclusive venue conceived in collaboration with American events promoter Live Nation and Toronto’s own rap icon, musician, songwriter, and entrepreneur, Drake.
