Kenneth Law, a 58-year-old former chef, has been slammed with 14 counts of second-degree murder charges, connected to the alleged sale of suicide kits. The latest charges add to his existing 14 counts for allegedly aiding or counselling suicides in Ontario.
His arrest happened in May after he marketed a substance typically used as a food additive, which can prove fatal if abused. He targeted vulnerable people via online platforms and is estimated to have distributed around 1,200 packages to people in over 40 nations since 2020.
272 people bought products from Law’s websites, leading to 88 fatalities in the United Kingdom. Countries like Italy and New Zealand have started investigations amid alerts from Interpol. Nine buyers have been identified in Italy with one death reported. The victims in Canada were across a wide age range.
Law is accused of delivering sodium nitrite, a substance that can be fatal if misused, to susceptible individuals in Ontario, the United Kingdom and Australia. The poison has allegedly led to the deaths of many people. He has however denied the allegations and remains in custody pending the conclusion of the investigations.
Toronto police seek to provide more details about the fresh charges during an imminent media briefing. This case has garnered international attention and triggered investigations in many countries.
