The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has disclosed that he would meet with Her Excellency Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova, when she visits Canada between May 11 and 12, 2023. This is the first time Moldova’s President will visit Canada since 1992. During the meeting, the leaders will discuss issues like the global impact of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and Eastern Europe’s security situation.
Both countries have maintained diplomatic relationship since 1992 and marked their 30th anniversary of bilateral relations in February 2022. During President Sandu’s visit to Canada, the two leaders will talk about the motivation of Moldova to join the European Union, as the country formally applied for membership in March 2022 and obtained EU candidate status in June 2022.

Also, the leaders will discuss domestic institutional reform and anti-corruption agenda of Moldova, and the country’s unwavering support in welcoming Ukrainian refugees that need shelter, safety, and humanitarian assistance.
Canada and Moldova have a great working relationship in many multilateral fora like La Francophonie, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Open Government Partnership (OGP), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the United Nations (UN), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Canada-Moldova Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) was signed in June 2018, recognizing the importance of progressive and inclusive trade and investment.
