The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has that ban has been placed on all assault-style firearms. “1,500 models and variants” which include AR-15 riffle are part of the arms included in the ban.
The ban will prohibit the firearms and some components from being used, bought, sold and imported.
According to a statement by the Canadian government, the ban won’t be fully effected for another two years so as “to protect owners of newly prohibited firearms from criminal liability while they take steps to comply with these new rules.”
Also, there are exceptions til April 30, 2022, for those in indigenous communities and for people who earn means of livelihood through hunting. But all items included in the list will be banned ultimately.
The Prime Minister’s order came two weeks after the mass shooting in Nova Scotia where a gunman killed 22 people.
While talking about the ban, Trudeau said: “Because of gun violence, people are dying, families are grieving, and communities are suffering. It must end. Assault-style firearms designed for military use have no place in Canada. By removing them from our streets, we will limit the devastating effects of gun-related violence and help make our country safer.”
It was stated in the release by the Canadian government that plans are in place to implement a buy-back arrangements for the listed weapons as soon as possible.
