The G20 presidency was formally handed over from India to Brazil during the closing ceremony of the annual G20 summit, which took place in New Delhi over the weekend.
The transition was marked by a symbolic exchange as India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, presented the ceremonial gavel of the presidency to Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1, succeeding Indonesia, and will continue to hold this esteemed position until November 30.
During the two-day summit, the G20 member nations reached a consensus declaration, encompassing commitments on various critical issues such as food and energy security, climate change, and addressing global debt vulnerabilities.
In addition to the handover, Prime Minister Modi proposed the convening of a “virtual summit” at the end of November to evaluate the progress made on the suggestions and proposals put forth by G20 member countries during the summit.
He emphasized the need to accelerate the implementation of these initiatives and stated, “In that session, we can review the topics decided during this summit.” Authorities said further details regarding this virtual summit will be shared with G20 members in due course.
