Markham’s esteemed Gupta family has contributed a remarkable $1 million to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in support of the Ted Rogers School of Management. The generous donation, facilitated through The Gupta Family Foundation by Dr. Steve and Rashmi Gupta, underscores their commitment to fostering higher education and empowering the community.
Dr. Gupta, the founder and chairman of The Gupta Group, expressed his belief in continuous learning, likening it to breathing and emphasizing that it should never cease. The family’s philanthropic ethos centers on giving back to the local community and creating opportunities for others to pursue success, aligning with TMU’s mission to help individuals develop skills that foster self-reliance.
A ceremonial cheque presentation took place at TMU’s campus on January 26, marking the official announcement of the substantial gift. The donation will fund endowed financial awards for MBA students specializing in hospitality and tourism management, along with vital unrestricted support to address the school’s priority needs as determined by the dean.
In the upcoming winter of 2025, the inaugural Gupta Family Foundation Award will be bestowed upon two deserving MBA students, further cementing the family’s commitment to education and student success.
Hailing from Markham, the Gupta Family stands as one of Canada’s exemplary entrepreneurial stories, embarking on their journey as immigrants from India in 1971 with a mere $108 to their name. Under the leadership of Dr. Gupta, The Gupta Group now manages one of the most extensive real estate portfolios in Ontario, encompassing residential, commercial, and hotel properties.
Dr. Gupta’s accolades, including being named Businessman of The Year by the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce in 2001 and receiving the Markham Board of Trade Award of Excellence in Business and Entrepreneurship in 2004, underscore his significant contributions to the business landscape. Additionally, he was honored with the Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award in 2013.
Beyond their economic achievements, the Gupta family is actively involved in philanthropy on a global scale. Initiatives like eye camps in India, providing cataract treatments to over 11,000 people, and a water and sanitation project for a girls’ school in India showcase their dedication to making a positive impact beyond business.
Dr. Cynthia Holmes, the dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management, acknowledged the institution’s diverse student population, with over 50% identifying as racialized and 30% being the first in their family to attend university. She expressed gratitude for the Gupta family’s investment in the future of TMU students, recognizing the unique resonance of their contribution given their immigrant background and success in Canadian business.
