Former US Secretary of State, Colin Powell has died. He died of Covid-19 complications at the age of 84.
While announcing his death on Facebook, his family wrote: “General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.
“We want to thank the medical staff… for their caring treatment.”
Powell was a former highly ranked military officer that became the first African-American secretary of state in 2001 under former United States president, George W Bush.
His experience while serving in the US-Vietnam war helped shape his military and political tactics as he became a trusted military adviser to many leading US politicians.
His national fame rose after the US-led coalition victory during the Gulf War, but his reputation would be forever dented when, as he pushed faulty intelligence before the United Nations to advocate for the Iraq War when he was Bush’s Secretary of State, under the claim that the country was developing weapons of mass destructions, an allegation that was proven false after the US invaded Iraq.
