A former SNC-Lavalin executive has been sentenced to more than 8 years. Sami Bebawi is the only former SNC-Lavalin employee to be sentenced in Canada in connection with the company’s business with Libya in the 2000s. He was found guilty in 2019 of bribing foreign officials and siphoning millions of dollars.
Sami Bebawi, 76, entered an appeal against his conviction on the grounds that based on inadmissible evidence—evidence gathered through an RCMP undercover operation targeting his former lawyer.
His legal representatives also argued that some of the acts for which he was convicted should not have been considered fraudulent as they did not put his victim’s financial interests at risk.
The Quebec Court of Appeal rejected those arguments, giving Bebawi ample time to pay back the proceeds from his crimes working for the Montreal-based engineering company.
From the ruling, Bebawi now has two years to pay back $24.69 million, instead of six months.
Bebawi was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in January 2020 after a jury found him guilty of five counts of fraud and corruption.
