Authorities in the Dominican Republic have said it could take months to identify all of the 28 victims that died in a recent explosion that occurred near the country’s capital.
The announcement came as friends and family kept making effort to confirm whether people close to them died during the explosion at a bakery in San Cristobal, just west of Santo Domingo.
Authorities in the Dominican Republic disclosed a patient in an intensive care unit has died, raising the death toll to 28. Fifty-nine people were injured, with the majority of them still in the hospital.
The explosion happened mid-afternoon in a commercial area in the city centre, filled with businesses.
An investigation is still ongoing to determine what caused the explosion, and authorities have said any business that was not operating properly will be held accountable. It took firefighters three days to quench the blaze, which according to officials spread from the bakery to the hardware store next door, and then to a close furniture store.

During a news conference, Santo Jiménez, a forensics institute director, said only seven of the bodies found have been identified and released to their families and It may take up to three months to identify some of the victims, he said. Authorities are working with family and friends who could provide helpful details such as any presence of tattoos or scars.
Jiménez said only one body of the 20 that remain at the morgue is intact.
