As the countdown begins for Christine Sinclair’s international soccer career, Coach Bev Priestman has emphasized that the impact of the longtime Canada captain will extend far beyond her playing days. Sinclair’s leadership and example have left an indelible mark on the team.
Coach Priestman commended Sinclair’s continuous dedication and high-performance habits, noting that she brings a notepad to every meeting, setting a standard for others to follow. Sinclair’s influence goes beyond her exceptional skills on the field; she leads by example, pushing her teammates to excel both on and off the pitch.
“I’ve heard her say the team is in safe hands. I think she’s very much done that,” Priestman said.
During a recent practice session, Sinclair demonstrated her work ethic even when not required, going the extra mile with her training routine alongside new players. These small but impactful actions set a tone of commitment and dedication for the entire team.
“She comes into a meeting with a notepad every time. Makes so many notes. There’s high-performance habits that the captain has led by example and it’s never changed. Everyone follows her lead.”
Priestman noted Sinclair’s work at a recent practice. “We’ve got two new players in [goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais and midfielder Emma Regan] and the other day, the greatest player of all-time is doing extra fitness at the end of the session. Little things like that set the tone.”
Sinclair, a 40-year-old from Burnaby, British Columbia, plans to continue her club career with the NWSL’s Portland Thorns for one more season. However, her time representing Canada is coming to a close, with two games against Australia in December marking the end of her illustrious international career.
The impact of Sinclair’s legacy transcends the field, as she serves as a role model and inspiration for future generations of Canadian soccer players. Her commitment to excellence and humility has left a lasting impression on the team, and her influence will continue to shape Canadian soccer for years to come.
As Sinclair approaches the end of her international career, Canada’s women’s soccer team prepares to honor and celebrate the greatest player the country has ever seen.
