Carolyn Bennett, Mental Health and Addictions Minister, Announces Retirement from Politics

In a significant announcement, Carolyn Bennett, the esteemed Mental Health and Addictions Minister, has revealed that she will not seek re-election as a member of Parliament. With a remarkable career spanning several decades, Bennett conveyed her decision to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to serve her devoted constituents in Toronto-St. Paul’s, calling it the “best job” she has ever had.

The momentous news coincided with Bennett’s announcement of vital government funding for a new 988 suicide crisis hotline in Toronto, underscoring her unwavering commitment to mental health and well-being.

A highly respected figure in Canadian politics, Carolyn Bennett was first elected to the House of Commons in 1997, following a successful career as a family physician and an associate professor at the prestigious University of Toronto.

Throughout her illustrious tenure, Bennett held several significant positions, including serving as the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs. Her dedication to addressing the challenges faced by Indigenous communities earned her widespread admiration.

Before her current role in mental health and addictions, she served as the Minister of State for Public Health under the leadership of former Prime Minister Paul Martin, contributing her expertise to public health initiatives.

As Bennett prepares to retire from the political arena, her legacy remains one of compassion, dedication, and public service. Her contributions to advancing mental health awareness and support, as well as her tireless advocacy for Indigenous communities, will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the nation.

As her career in politics draws to a close, Canadians remember Carolyn Bennett not only as a prominent Liberal minister but also as a compassionate and tireless advocate for the welfare of her fellow citizens. Her commitment to public service has been an inspiration to many, and her presence will be missed in the political landscape.
