Carleton University, Canada, has unveiled Pius Adesanmi African Studies Resource Centre in memory of late Nigerian scholar and writer, Prof Pius Adesanmi.
Late Professor Adesanmi joined the University in 2006 and was the University’s Director of the Institute for African Studies (IAS) prior to his death.
The resource centre’s aim is to make IAS a hub for students of the University, visiting researchers and community members for research and networking.

Prof. Pius Adesanmi was among the 18 people that died in the Ethiopian Airlines jet crash at Addis Ababa Airport in 2019.
At the time of his death, he was the Director of the Institute of African Studies and a faculty member in The Department of English Language and Literature of the University.
Pius was a great writer, poet and political commentator. He is celebrated for his eloquence and fearlessness in speaking truth to power.
A statement on the university’s website read: “He worked tirelessly to build the Institute of African Studies, to share his boundless passion for African literature and to connect with and support students. He was a scholar and teacher of the highest calibre who leaves a deep imprint on Carleton.”

Also, a memorial fund has been established by the University to support students and carry on his life’s work.
