Canada’s first Black-led BIPOC focused digital bank, Expedier named among top 12 startups

Canada’s first Black-led BIPOC focused digital bank, Expedier has been announced among the top 12 startups to contend for the 2023 Digital Commerce Calgary Fintech Award grand prizes.

According to the organizers, from an initial batch of 150 standout applications from startups across Canada, only 25 companies embarked on the intensive six-week workshop series. “Now, after careful deliberation from our panel of judges, we’re proud to announce the Top 12 startups, each set to contend for the 2023 Digital Commerce Calgary Fintech Award grand prizes,” the organizers said.

They stated that these companies have risen above the competition and secured their spot to compete for over $300,000 in non-dilutive cash.

“The exceptional contenders have impressed us with their innovative fintech solutions and ideas, showcasing their potential to disrupt and reshape the financial technology landscape.

“With an expanded scope that now includes startups from across Canada, we’re proud to introduce the companies that have emerged as frontrunners in this highly anticipated award competition”.

Remarkably, Kingsley Madu and Michael Obembe owned Expedier was among the only 25 companies that embarked on the intensive six-week workshop series and was eventually named the top 12 to contest for the coveted prizes.

It is imperative to note that there are over 200 banks and financial institutes in Canada and there are almost 2 million blacks in Canada, but Expedier is the only Black led BIPOC focused digital bank in Canada.

A statement on the Digital Commerce Calgary Fintech Award website said CEO Kingsley Madu offers an intriguing perspective on the richness of diversity in Canada, and thinks Expedier has the potential to shape the future of global finance by helping underbanked immigrants struggling with foreign banking systems by enhancing financial access.

Sharing his enthusiasm on making the initial cut and the support the competition offers, Madu said, “The excitement I feel personally is beyond words and a popular saying came to mind shortly after the first announcement. If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together!”

The Digital Commerce Calgary Fintech Award helps growing fintech startups elevate their business, make connections and scale their operations. The Award sets the stage for extraordinary entrepreneurs and innovations that will reshape the fintech landscape across Canada. Over several weeks, startup founders participate in workshops, receive coaching and mentorship and build connections to investors and industry experts to drive some serious growth for their businesses. They have the opportunity to tell their story and increase their brand visibility. To sweeten the deal (you could call it the cherry on top), they have a chance to compete for one of three prizes totaling $300,000+.
