Canada Warns Citizens Visiting Morocco-Algeria Border

The Canadian government has issued a cautionary advisory to its citizens by urging them to avoid the Morocco-Algeria border region when they visit Morocco. This advisory came after a tragic incident where Algerian Coast guards opened fire, resulting in the death of two Moroccan-French tourists whose jet skis drifted into Algerian waters recently.

The tragic incident occurred when two Moroccan tourists on jet skis found themselves in distress as they unintentionally crossed into Algerian waters and ran out of fuel while trying to return to Moroccan waters.

The incident resulted in two fatalities, with one survivor swimming back to Morocco, where he was rescued by a Moroccan sea patrol. The other victim encountered legal consequences, receiving an 18-month prison sentence from an Algerian court.

The advisory from Canada stated that Morocco’s border with Algeria is closed and cautioned against any effort to cross into Algeria by land or water. Safety concerns triggered this advisory to safeguard Canadian travellers.

While responding to the situation, the Algerian government warned its citizens and urged them to refrain from boating near the maritime border to avoid unintentional crossings.

A few days before Canada’s advisory was issued, the United Kingdom issued a similar notice, urging British citizens traveling to Morocco to exercise caution in Algerian waters. The UK Foreign Office emphasized the importance of knowing the maritime border’s location and staying within Moroccan territorial waters while boating or jet skiing.

The advisory also recommended checking fuel levels to ensure a safe return to shore, as the land border between Algeria and Morocco remains closed. Travelers were reminded that the border extends into the sea, urging them to avoid any attempts to cross it.
