The Canada-United States border will remain closed to non-essential travel for a minimum of one month.
The Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair announced recently that the closure has been extended to March 21, 2021 — exactly a year after the longest undefended border in the world was first closed to halt the spread of COVID-19.
Since the first closure, the closure has been extended month by month.
As more transmissible variants of the coronavirus is spreading across North America, the recent extension is expected not to be the last.
Blair tweeted that the government will carry on in basing its decisions on the border “on the best public health advice to keep Canadians safe.”
The border is still open to essential travel throughout the pandemic in an effort to avoid interrupting the transportation of food, medical supplies and other essential items between Canada and the United States.
