Recent developments in the United States have prompted Canada to issue a travel advisory to LGBTQ travellers. As anti-LGBTQ demonstrations increased by a surprising 30-fold in the United States compared to 2017, concerns about the legal actions being taken in some states that could potentially limit LGBTQ rights have increased.
Canada’s travel advisory for the United States has issued an important update, which includes a cautionary message for LGBTQ travellers. The advisory is for individuals who identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex, also known as 2SLGBTQI+. The advisory urges these travellers to be aware of potential risks associated with recent laws and policies in certain states that might affect their rights and safety. Though the advisory doesn’t mention the states in question, it enumerates the importance of checking relevant state and local laws before travel.
While shedding light on why the travel advisory update was issued, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland explained that the Canadian government relies on experts to monitor global developments and assess potential dangers to specific groups of Canadians closely. Freeland stated the core principle of prioritizing the safety and interests of all Canadians, regardless of their background or identity. Though she refrained from stating whether discussions were held with the administration of Biden before issuing the advisory, it is clear that Canada is taking proactive measures to protect its citizens.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the biggest LGBTQ advocacy organization in the United States, has declared a national state of emergency. The organization points to the increasing proliferation of legislation across state capitols that aims to regulate various aspects of LGBTQ individuals’ lives. This declaration highlights the urgency of the situation and states the need for a joint effort to counteract the potential rollback of LGBTQ rights.
Despite these developments, the overall risk profile for travelling to the United States remains at the green level. This indicates the requirement for normal security precautions. United States is a very popular travel destination for Canadians, with approximately 2.8 million trips embarked in June alone. According to official data released last year, around 4% of the Canadian population aged 15 years and older identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or with an orientation other than heterosexual. This demographic forms an important portion of Canadian society, which further underscores the importance of safeguarding their rights and well-being.
