Canada has announced that it would will start permitting fully-vaccinated US citizens and permanent residents into the country on August 9 for non-essential travel as the threat from the Covid-19 pandemic subsides.

According to the announcement, fully-vaccinated visitors from other countries will be allowed to enter starting from Sept. 7. The government said in a statement that the relaxation of the restriction depends on Canada’s COVID-19 epidemiology remaining favorable.

Businesses in US and Canada, most especially the travel and airline industries, had been requesting that the restrictions on non-essential travel between both countries be ended.

The statement by the government read: “Thanks to the hard work of Canadians, rising vaccination rates and declining COVID-19 cases, the government … is able to move forward with adjusted border measures.”

People who are eligible to enter Canada must have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days before coming to Canada. As from August 9, Ottawa will lift the requirement that all travelers arriving by air must spend three nights in a hotel.

The government reiterated that Canadians should avoid non-essential travel abroad.
