Defence Ministers of Canada and Latvia have announced that they would commence a joint military training program for Ukrainian soldiers in Latvia starting May 15. The program will teach Ukrainian junior officers on their responsibilities in battle, planning and orders, manoeuvre coordination, intelligence reconnaissance, planning and executing.
The training will happen alongside Canada’s training efforts under Operation Unifier, currently underway in the United Kingdom and Poland. The expansion of the training program shows Ukraine’s need to maintain its democracy and sovereignty against the increasing aggression by Russia.
The joint military training program reflects the significance of supporting Ukraine in its effort to maintain its democracy and sovereignty. The program safeguards the international rules-based order that has maintained peace since the Second World War. By offering training for Ukrainian soldiers, the government of Canada and Latvia hope to strengthen the country’s defence and help it resist Russian aggression.
The Western military alliance approved the conversion of battle groups in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania to full combat brigades of 4,000 to 6,000 troops each, depending on the availability of equipment, at the NATO summit which took place in Madrid around a year ago.
About 800 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members have been deployed by the Canadian government to Latvia, where Canada has been serving as the framework nation for the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia since 2017. About 45 CAF soldiers are combat engineers saddled with the responsibility of training Ukrainians in advanced engineering skills, reconnaissance and the use of explosives. Another 25 CAF members are training tank crews in using Leopard 2 main battle tanks. The remaining ten CAF personnel are training Ukrainian soldiers skills and tactics to help them save lives in combat situations.
