The British Columbia Liberal party has proposed and a new name. According to the party, the proposed name, BC United, was chosen after a three-month membership consultation exercise where over 2,000 names were suggested.
In a recent statement, the party said a voting process would be announced in the coming weeks and its members would have the opportunity to cast their vote on the new name by the end of 2022.
The party says over two-thirds of delegates who were present at last June’s convention in Penticton voted in favour of giving consideration to a new name.
Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon promised to consider a name change during one of his leadership campaign promises earlier this year.
According to the party, BC United reflects a fresh alternative that demonstrates a commitment to unity across many members, while reflecting the name of the province.
The B.C. Liberals have always seen themselves as a free enterprise alliance of federal Liberals and Conservatives, but some members of the party have revealed that the name has confused or pissed off conservative-leaning voters.
