Bangladesh is considering the use of the death penalty for rapists and will seek to amend the current legislation as soon as possible.
The country has witnessed a lot of protests recently as many people took to the streets to demand justice for the victims of the consistent rape that has plagued the country.
These protests have made the government pursue capital punishment for offenders that are convicted.
Rape in Bangladesh has increased recently with gang rape incidents accounting for over a fifth of all rape cases. According to Ain-o-Salish Kendra, a human rights organisation, around 1,000 gang rape attacks occurred between January and September.
During the recent protests in Dhaka, protesters were seen screaming “Hang the rapists” while other protesters were carrying placards which state: “No mercy to rapists” and “Please tell me, am I next?”.
The government of Bangladesh will convene soon to deliberate on the proposal and if the deliberations are positive, the country could witness immediate and urgent amendments to current legislation.
