In a surprising development, the Jamaica Tallawahs will not be participating in the upcoming 2024 season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The renowned franchise will be replaced by a team from Antigua, marking a significant shift in the league’s dynamics. The Jamaica Tallawahs, with an impressive track record as the second-most successful team in CPL history, clinched the inaugural title in 2013 and secured additional victories in 2016 and 2022.
Under the leadership of Brandon King in the 2023 season, the Tallawahs faced an unexpected exit in Qualifier 2 against eventual champions Guyana Amazon Warriors. The franchise, previously owned by Florida-based Guyanese businessman Kris Persaud, was sold back to the CPL due to challenges in sustaining the team, as confirmed by a CPL spokesperson to ESPNcricinfo.
Antigua’s cricket enthusiasts, however, have reason to celebrate as a new franchise from their region is set to debut in the CPL 2024, replacing the Tallawahs. The yet-to-be-named Antigua-based franchise brings excitement to the league, with memories of the early seasons when the Antigua Hawksbills participated before being replaced in 2015 by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
In a recent report by the Antigua Observer, Daryll Matthew, the minister of sports in the Antigua and Barbuda Senate, expressed interest in hosting a CPL franchise in 2024, projecting potential annual revenues of around US$6 million.
While there were initial plans to introduce a franchise from Jamaica in 2024, the CPL has decided to postpone this until the 2025 edition. The 2024 CPL will feature six teams representing Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Meanwhile, West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell, who recently led the team to a 3-2 series win against England, expressed disappointment that Sabina Park in Jamaica will not host any matches during the T20 World Cup in June 2024. Powell, a Jamaican, urged the West Indies Cricket Board and the Jamaican government to address the issue and allow him to play in front of his home crowd.
It’s worth noting that Jamaica has not hosted a CPL match since 2019, and the upcoming CPL 2024 season, without the Tallawahs, is set to kick off in August and extend into September.
