Amazon has revealed it would end its pandemic-related allowances for those working in its Canadian warehouses at the end of May.
The spokesperson of Amazon, Kelly Cheeseman confirmed yesterday that the e-commerce giant will cease paying employees the additional $2 per hour and double overtime allowances they had been collecting since start of COVID-19 pandemic.
While talking about the pay incentives, Cheeseman said: “This appreciation pay incentive enabled us to deliver essential items to communities during these unprecedented times.
“We are grateful to associates supporting customers during a time of increased demand, and are returning to our regular pay and overtime wages at the end of the month.”
The pay incentives of Amazon were initially supposed to end last month but the company extended the payment to May 30 in both the U.S. and Canada.
Amazon workers in the U.S and Canada had criticized the company for not putting in place protective measures to protect them from COVID-19 and not providing adequate support to employees who contract the disease.
Amazon disclosed it hass spent hundreds of millions of dollars to put in place COVID-19 safety measures in its different warehouses.
