Nate Glubish, Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation, has announced an investment of over $80 million in the Canadian Critical Drug Initiative in Edmonton. The initiative is led by Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation in partnership with the University of Alberta and it aims to produce new and critical medicines.
The governments of both the federal and provincial levels have commended the initiative as the first of its kind in Western Canada. Under the initiative, the new facility is expected to produce around 70 million doses of medicines annually.
Also, the investment is expected to create many employment opportunities in the field of pharmaceuticals and empower the position of Alberta in the life sciences sector.
This funding is an important step towards securing a local supply chain for critical drugs, which has been a serious concern in the healthcare industry. The Canadian Critical Drug Initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the healthcare system by offering citizens with access to essential medicines.
