Nigeria has been excluded from the United States $91 million COVID-19 response fund to countries in Africa, as the country still battle poverty and insecurity.
While announcing the Western country’s intervention fund to Africa in a statement, Jeremy Konyndyk, the Executive Director of the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) COVID-19 task force did not list Nigeria amongst the beneficiaries of the $91 million relief fund.
Konyndyk said the relief fund was availed to African countries to tackle urgent humanitarian needs caused by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
He said further that the $91 million would provide needed food assistance, health care, water, and psychosocial support for people across Africa.
USAID’s statement read: “Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) COVID-19 Task Force Executive Director Jeremy Konyndyk announced more than $91 million to provide urgently needed food assistance, health care, water, and psychosocial support for people across Africa, in order to address urgent humanitarian needs caused by the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.”
Countries that will benefit from the U.S COVID-19 relief fund are Burkina Faso, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, DR Congo, Mozambique, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Zimbabwe.
