A Nigerian woman, Raufikat Oyawoye, has made history in Canada by beating nine other bakers to emerge winner of the ‘Great Canadian Baking Show’ Season 4.
Raufikat becomes the first Nigerian to win the competition since the contest began in 2017.
The Great Canadian Baking Show started its 4th season on February 14, 2021, and Raufikat emerged winner on April 4, 2021, after 8 weeks of competition.
The 35-year-old Nigerian is a mother of two and an IT support Engineer at Milton, Ontario.
Before Raufikat left Nigeria for Canada, she worked in MTN Nigeria, Galaxy Backbone and Nigeria Communication Commission.
The Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate of the University of Minna contested against fellow finalists Tanner Davies of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Mahathi Mundluru of Markham, Ontario in the season finale.
In an emotional ceremony that reunited the finalists with fellow bakers who started the event with them in the season, hosts Ann Pornel and Alan Shane declared Raufikat as the winner.
Mahathi said: “Raufikat totally deserved that win. She’s such a phenomenal baker, so talented, and never delivered anything less than perfection.”
Raufikat’s husband, Taofeek disclosed that his wife’s uniqueness reflects in the fact that she puts her love in what she does.
He said: “Even when she’s missing home, and homesick, she will want to do get up and bake.”
Raufikat revealed that her mother’s kitchen when she was in Nigeria inspired her flavours.
